Going Live On Periscope
I’ve just finished listening to the Darren Rowse podcast series 31 days to a better blog. A few years back I bought the book and it was great to have it as a podcast though, as I could used the normally wasted commuting time to learn a few things. One of the things I’ve decided to do is broadcast the weekly show live on periscope, Twitter’s live video streaming platform.
This could be a disaster
I haven’t done live video streaming of myself since the late 90s. Back then it was A LOT harder and done over 56kbps modems! Doing the show live will be interesting. Normally I record it all in a single take but occasionally I’ll have to edit out the odd cough or sneeze. I don’t have people asking questions during the show though so that will be new. I’ll also have to pay attention to two cameras. At this stage I’m just going to play it by ear and see how we go. Hopefully it won’t be a disaster.
What is your ideal viewing time?
I usually try to keep the show to around 10mins, tomorrow may go a little longer though. My plan is to record as usual and upload Tuesday night as normal. I’d be interested to know what length of video you find acceptable to watch online? For me it will depend on what I’m doing. For instance I’ll watch two hour documentaries on Youtube in the evenings but I’d rarely watch anything over 10mins in work hours. Podcasts are a bit different though. I’ll listen to them whilst driving or working in my shed/lab at home. As my mate @sammartino says “ears are the new killer app” .
The equipment
I’ll be using the 7D to record the show as usual and periscope will be going out via my iphone. I’m thinking of plugging in the headset and use the mic so I don’t get a lot of ambient noise coming through as well. Then for the 7d I’ll just be using my Sony lavalier mics. I’ll be going live on periscope tomorrow at 12:00 AEST which is GMT+10:00 . I may change the time if I decide to go live again but for tomorrow it will be at 12.
