3 SEO Gems You Probably Didn’t Know.

by Jim October 23, 2013

It’s amazing what you can learn in a week. That’s one of the great things about SEO it forces you to learn or get out of the game. It’s been a great week of learning for me. There are three things I wanted to share with you that I didn’t know 10 days ago.

1. SEO For Video

If you were lucky enough to have completed the Youtube Creator Course like I did last week you would already know this one. One of the main factors to how videos are now ranked is “watch time”. The longer your videos are watched the more likely that Google will rank them in Youtube search and Google search. Makes sense right? If people are watching them for longer they must be quality stuff. You will still have to make sure you do all the other SEO steps for your videos but “Watch Time” is the new major signal for ranking.

2. Authorship Is Retroactive

THis was a big one for me. I was a bit of a grump last Thursday morning because Google I had not indexed my Wednesday blog and some other fu *&$$!# person had ripped my content and was ranking higher. I learned though that Google Authorship trumps content age… well it did for me anyway. Is your content duplicated around the place? No problem, just add Authorship.

3. Rank Fast Once You Clean Up the Mess

We are finding now that once we sort out clients sites for 404s, duplication, bad indexing and a host of other common bad practices, they will jump to the top 10 the first time they publish new content. The turnaround is quite significant. We have worked on some absolute lemons of websites recently but they have still jumped to the top 10 once we’ve fixed their structural issues and added a new piece of content.  The speed of this ranking I believe is happening for two reasons. Firstly a lot of the spam content is gone from the SERPs so it is no longer clogging up the first page of results. Secondly, Google more than ever is rewarding the regular publishing of unique quality content.  Love to know what you learned this week. 🙂
