Why YOU Should Be Creating Your Own Video Content

by Jim November 23, 2011

Ever wondered how we do our videos? This week you’re in for a treat because I’ll show you exactly how I shoot, edit and promote my videos as well as take a look at all the gear we use on our show so you can start creating your own video content.

But why should I be making my own videos?

It’s Cheap and Easy
It’s a lot easier to talk about something you know than to write about it. Creating videos is a great way to generate new original content without spending too much time laboring over a written article. Your writing skills may not be top notch but your experience talking about your chosen topic definitely is. You know enough about your topic to spitball about the latest happenings in your field for days. Take advantage of that experience and expertise.

Online video is still rapidly growing

Online Video Sharing Statistics

Research shows Internet video is rapidly on the rise. In 2006 only 33% of Internet users visited video sharing sites such as YouTube and Vimeo. In 2011, that same number has jumped to 71%. People are watching more video every day online and consuming more video content than ever before. There’s a hungry audience waiting for your videos, all you need to do is…

Demonstrate your expertise
Think you’re an expert in your chosen topic? Prove it with online video. If your videos are interesting and relevant, viewers are likely to think of you down the road should they ever need your expertise. While not our intention when we first began the show all those years ago, our videos are now a valuable lead generator that provides Stew Art Media with a great way to initiate that first contact with potential clients in a far more valuable way than traditional lead generation methods. Video content makes it easier for potential leads to understand your brand and what you’re all about, meaning more a more personal relationship with the leads that do come through.

Grow your backlink portfolio
Your videos can be published to a plethora of video sharing sites. Adding a link back to your site in your video description means more backlinks, but more importantly, more points of entry to your website. If you’re doing a video every week distributed to five video sharing networks that all have unique user-bases, you’re creating a lot of ways to drive traffic to your site.

Convinced yet? Here are a few more tips to get you on your way:

  • Be consistent with your videos. We upload without fail every Wednesday, giving our subscribers a routine and turning our videos into a weekly event.
  • Embed your videos in a blog post. YouTube traffic is great, but popping an embed of your video on your blog with a bit of content will increase your chances of viewers checking out the rest of your site.
  • Optimise your title and description with keywords you want your video to rank for. Adding tags to your videos to make it easier for people to find is also a great way for people to discover your videos.
