So I wrote this post on Monday about trying to rank for the phrase SEO Consultant Melbourne. Five minutes after I wrote it we were at 122. The following morning it had jumped to 22 & 23 but then dropped back to 53. Then yesterday it came back to 22 & 23. This morning I am happy to report it went to no.10. If the last few days are anything to go by it may drop back today to 22 or so then come back to the front page tomorrow. My conclusion is that this is a mildly competitive phrase. Even though it’s only taken 3 days to get on the front page, it took two articles with 3 or four updates. The screenshot below shows where I rank at the time of writing this article.
A couple of things I have learned from this exercise. 1. If you see an ranking come in high in the morning then disappear in the afternoon, chances are it will come back the following day. 2. Updating regularly is key. You don’t need external backlinks to rank for a phrase. There have been internal backlinks via our navigation menus and between articles. 3. Possibly I could have got a higher ranking faster had I backlinked from G+. The reason I didn’t, is that I wanted to avoid alerting a cluster of SEOs from trying to rank for the same phrase and influencing the outcome. I’ll now be able to check actual search impressions for this phrase by Monday as data will begin to appear in Google Webmaster Tools. As of today Google is reporting 30 searches a day but most of those may have come from our office! LOL. I don’t expect much traffic but that doesn’t mean people are not chasing this phrase for bragging rights!
