It’s been ten days since I wrote the original post targeting the phrase “SEO Consultant Melbourne”. The exercise was to see how difficult it would be to get ranked. I didn’t think it had much traffic potential but Google webmaster tools is reporting 250 searches so far. So presumably that a couple thousand a month of a very targeted phrase.
Those numbers surprised me. The other thing to note is that when you target one phrase for ranking you will invariably rank for variations of that phrase, as the screen cap above shows. The Avg position is taking an average over the period selected. We started at position 122 and then within 3 days we got to no.10 for “SEO Consultant Melbourne”. I have not been tracking the other phrases listed in that image but look at the difference in search volume between the singular and plural. Presumably if someone is looking for a consultant they are not looking for a bunch of them (not sure what the collective noun is for a bunch of SEOs, please enlighten me if you have any ) . We did not get any backlinks except one from LinkedIn which is a redirect/nofollow and I think one from G+.
UPDATE: Google is totally mental. After I wrote this article this morning, the cluster of results that we ended up with on the second page (see UPDATE: 7/7/2013) disappeared and we had one result at no.10 and another at 15. I thought I would go and update the original article with a link to this one. Minutes after I did BOOM off the front page and the cluster appeared again. Before you ask, it is always the first article ranking the highest. So if my theory is correct I should get page one back after publishing this update.
