Mobile SEO Alert

by Jim January 21, 2015

Sometimes Google reminds me of a patient headmaster doling out advice and wisdom and then loses it and starts randomly whacking people with a cricket bat who wear a certain type of hat. We are fast approaching a whacking day.

Since Jan 16 Google has been sending out emails warning web site owners that they need to fix “mobile usability ” issues.  This means we are at the point where Google is looking for its cricket bat. It’s suggested to certain hat owners that their headwear is somewhat offensive to cranium fanciers everywhere and now they are getting a formal warning.

Mobile SEO Warnings

Google has been banging on about getting your site mobile optimised for years and they have made several changes to their tools and their algorithm to help mobile users. Last year Google warned us about getting rid of your m.subdomain site as well as warnings about “flash animation ” and updates to webmaster tools highlighting problems for mobile users with your site. Now come more warnings with clear instructions . Sites (or more specifically, pages) that are not meeting Google’s requirements for mobile users, will lose rankings in mobile search. Google has spelled it out pretty clearly

“These pages will not be seen as mobile-friendly by Google Search, and will therefore be displayed and ranked appropriately for smartphone users.”

If you were ranked no.1 for something in Google mobile search and that page is not optimised for mobile, say goodbye to the rankings & traffic.

Mobile Is Massive

We’re seeing a massive upswing in mobile usage over the last twelve months. It’s not unusual to see sites now with 40% mobile traffic. That is a large chunk of users that Google wants to keep happy and send them to mobile optimised sites. In this week’s video I show you how to work out how many of your users are mobile and where to find what revenue they are generating. It the example below, half the users from Google search are mobile and they are contributing nearly half the revenue.
