3 SEO Tools To Avoid

by Jim May 21, 2014

SEO is not hard. Let me rephrase that, SEO is not that hard once you have a feel for it. Like most things , the more you do it, the better you get at it. Of course there are situations where SEO can become complicated because of the platform you are using but for the most part SEO is pretty simple, once you have the basic principles. Where I see people get into trouble is when they are constantly thinking of the bot rather than humans. If you are using any SEO tool that falls into these categories I would rethink your SEO strategy. I know this is SEO heresy to some (especially those with massive website farms) but you cannot have a one size fits all approach to SEO. Yes you can have a set of guiding SEO principles but at the end of the day every search result is different, so you need to understand why Google ranks one web page above another for different searches. As soon as you start relying too heavily on these sorts of tools you lose site of the bigger picture.

Keyword Density Tools

Any tool that measures the keyword frequency or density of a page is about as useful as a motorcycle ashtray. Sure you need to use your keywords but as soon as you start applying formulas you’ve lost it. I even had someone tell me once that all you had to do was mention a keyword 32 times on a page and you would rank for it. Forget about your keyword density tools, just use your keywords where appropriate.

Trust or Citation Tools

I know this will upset a few SEO peeps who make their living from these things but as I show in today’s video the site that we were checking that does not rank anywhere and has a “Moztrust” of 10. The site that ranks no.4 for the search has a Moztrust of 0.

Backlinking Tools

OMG avoid these things like you would a politician at a bbq. I saw so many sites get their rankings obliterated over the last year that used a couple of popular backlinking tools. I’ve kept an eye on the companies that made the tools and they have all changed their pitch. They’re no longer selling backlinking tools, they’ll be selling some ridiculous rank tracking tools, keyword analysis or some other SEO snake oil.

Next week I’ll take you through the must have SEO tools.
