SEO Tutorial 2011

by Jim September 14, 2011

I did a shout out this morning on Twitter for anyone who wanted an SEO site review. I only got responses from Kiwi mates as it was early! The two sites I am reviewing today have similar issues when it comes to ranking. In summary they are;

Duplicate or similar content

When I checked the Google index with the site:webaddress.com technique, I found that both sites had content in the index that they probably didn’t want or shouldn’t have in there. It is always a good place to start.

Page Titles & SEO

Remember, this is the first label that Google sees about a webpage so make sure you are clear what the page is about; here’s a tip, it’s never about your brand when it comes to search. Your brand really has no place in your page title except maybe on your “About Us” page.

Key phrases on the page

Seems like a simple concept I know but I often see this overlooked at a very basic level. When you have identified a winning phrase in during your keyword research, it is important to carry that phrase EXACTLY from the page title, to heading, to links etc on the page. If it is important enough to have it on your page title, it should be important enough for a heading and to be in the copy, exactly as it is in the page title.

Sorry about the kiwi joke today!
