Here’s a conundrum. We have a client that wants to rank for “Botox Melbourne” but legally is not able to mention the word botox anywhere on their site. We actually got the to no.4 through just using creative file names and tagging with the word Botox but then our client decided they wanted the word removed from every area of their site. The decision was based on a ruling by Therapeutic Goods Association (TGA) here in Australia. I won’t try to explain it as it is not my area of expertise but basically I think if your providing therapeutic services you cannot market Botox in any way…. or something like that. That means I can talk about Botox Melbourne until the cows come home as I’m not selling it but I cannot link to my client who is.
Here’s thing though, if you have a look at the results for Botox Melbourne you will see that every ranking page is using the phrase. One of the top results has it in user comments not sure if that is an easy way around the regulations or not. Another site that ranks very highly for the phrase, has backlinks all over it to a company in Melbourne that injects Botox. The site is a dot com and a quick whois lookup on the domain reveals the owners name (you can have private registration!). When you Google the person’s name it is very quickly revealed that they are a web developer based in Melbourne. A little more digging and you find out that they built the site that the dot com links to. Busted! No one seems to care though because it has been like that for about a year now.
Even all the places entries either have Botox Melbourne in the description or they have lots of comments with the phrase. Some of them do look a little spammy. So we’ve been thinking of creative ways to rank for the phrase, like back linking the word Botox in another language. Except in every other language Botox is, well um Botox. So how would you go about ranking for a phrase you are not allowed to have anywhere on your site and you can’t really have back links for? Botox is also a forbidden word to use in Google Adwords as it is a prescribed pharmaceutical. Just as an addendum, guess how many pages that dot com site that ranks for Botox Melbourne has in the index? The answer will astound you. Post a comment if you work it out 🙂
