Welcome back Rankers! I’ve been having an awesome time. I just got back from the ProBlogger event on the Gold Coast last night, Sunday that is. It was an awesome event as always and I learned so much. I always get inspired when I get to hang out around bloggers where I get to hear their stories, what they’re doing and the issues they are dealing with, all while building businesses. It is very awesome and very inspiring. Definitely one of the reasons I created the bloggersSEO product.
I want to say a big thank you to everyone I met there and those that had lovely things to say about my presentations. I appreciate the feedback and I hope we stay connected, as you are all a bloody fun bunch of people. Unlocking the Code Now I did tell you before I went to ProBlogger that the thing we’ve worked out in the office, the new SEO technique that we’ve found, not really an exploit per se, rather it’s something that Google is doing wrong. Well, maybe something that Google isn’t doing right is a better way of putting it. It’s the way Google is ingesting certain types of content, and we worked out that if you code that content in a certain type of way, it’s not good for you. Unfortunately, the wrong way is the common way for most people, and it’s all due to the fact that you just wouldn’t know the difference. So I was telling a few people about it over the weekend and they will be going away to implement some changes. As I said earlier, I won’t be putting it on the show publicly, as it’s a powerful little weapon. A Powerful SEO Secret Case in point. This is a Melbourne-based client and I’ve been working on this particular phrase for them for around six months.
Me. Personally. And I couldn’t get it on to page 1. Well I did a couple of times as you can see on the chart, but it bounced in and out a few times. Incidentally, the Google update happened during this time, but it didn’t really have an effect on the result. It’s purely the little technique that we used. It went from over 100 to number 10. Which is great. The people that did our SEO Masterclass at the ProBlogger event over the weekend learnt this technique and are no doubt implementing it on their sites as I speak. So if you do come to Vegas, I will let you in on the secret and tell you how to implement it on your own site. I’m happy to talk about it in person, but I’m not willing to broadcast it at this stage. Ignore Google at Your Peril What I will be talking about on stage is SEO site migration. If you are pushing a new site live, the worst thing you can do is not think about what will happen with Google. Sure you might be thinking about Amazon, or eBay, or the thousands of other tasks you need to check off, like inventory, shopping carts, accounting, site design, Conversion Rate, and UX. People always invest their time heavily in these areas (as you should) but often fail to allocate some planning time to Google. If you push a new site live without thinking about Google, this is what happens.
This particular site here went live and you can see the traffic drop-off is immediate. Rankings improved from the day we began work on the site, but it is yet to return to where it was. It has taken us two months of hard slog to get us back to this point, and in that time we’ve lost traffic and sales. If you are coming to Vegas, come and see me and we can discuss SEO site migration and I’ll show you how we avoid these sorts of issues from happening to your site. Hopefully that’s helpful. I’d really love to see you all in Vegas. If you do make it I’ll share that free tip. Come to stand 121 and see the two Jims. Thanks very much. Bye.
Jim’s been here for a while, you know who he is.
