Google algorithm change, where’s the angst?

by Jim March 2, 2011

On Friday afternoon last week I actually walked around in circles excitedly for a bit too long, based on the stares I was getting from staff, as I contemplated the Google algorithm change that had just been announced. Would our client’s competitors disappear from the index? We know some of them are using very questionable SEO tactics. Would the mighty hand of Google smite them down in a digital armageddon and lay waste to their trickery and false relevance? Maybe certain SEO companies practicing the dark arts of black hat rankings, would see their results crushed by the Google SERP-ent. I braced myself, took a breath and wrote what I thought would be a very topical blog post. Then I waited.. and waited… and then.. nothing, nada, zilch, zippo, zero. The algorithm change was the equivalent of a Melbourne ‘cool change’ on a 40 degree day when you find out it’s only going to be 20 degrees overnight not 25. Whoopdybloodydo! It still means sleepness nights.

The big change on Friday was meant to affect 12% of search results. Here’s the thing though, no one’s reporting any massive changes that you would expect from such an announcement. There are some good lessons you can still take away from the announcement though by looking at the sites that the change was reportedly targeting.
