Yesterday in Keyword Research Secrets I spoke about selecting your keywords using Google Insights for search. The “how to present” phrase had inconsistent results when I looked at related phrases.
The table above shows related searches. None of those phrases have anything to with do with the audience we are trying to target. When we compare that information with the volume graph, we can see that there is a spike every year around Christmas time. The word present in this keyphrase is skewing the data when people search for “presents”.
In the video I then cross check this phrase with Google Suggestions. By looking at that data it confirms that “how to present” is not a good phrase to chase.
Once you know which phrases your going to try and rank for, check who you’re up against. Remember you’re not trying to beat the Google algorithm. You’re just trying to beat the no.1 result. In the video example, it’s pretty obvious what the no.1 result is doing and Google likes it. Copy that, get to say no.2 or 3 and then go that extra mile with great regular content and you’ll get to number one.
