5 Signs Your Links Are Destroying Your Rankings

by Jim April 4, 2012

After last week’s show we had a lot of viewers all asking us the same question: How do I know if my links are harming my rankings?

Here’s 5 warning signs that your links are hurting your rankings:

  1. You frequently buy services from responded to an email that begin with “Hello Business Owner”
  2. You get Google traffic for the search term “%FNMdf$BuyViagraCheapnksjdhgimry5673$”
  3. Your SEO provider is Fiverr.com
  4. Your primary referrer is http://lifeinsurancecreditcardhomeloanearncashfromhome.com
  5. You paid for it…

But in all seriousness, if you paid for a link, it’s at best worthless and at worst detrimental to your rankings.

But what about those of you who had no part in building these links? Maybe you’ve put your trust in an SEO provider who is following spammy, short-term strategies like link buying that will cripple your site’s ranking in the future. If that’s the case you need to know what to look for in your backlink portfolio.

We use a wide array of free and paid tools to see where our links are coming from, including Majestic SEO, Open Site Explorer and Google Webmaster Tools. These services not only allow us to see where our links are coming from, but can also give us an idea of the authority and weight of the links. When you’re looking through your backlink portfolio with these services, there’s three warning signs you should keep an eye out for.

  • Links from sites that have nonsensical or irrelevant content
  • An unnatural amount of backlinks that are an exact match for one of your target phrases
  • Links from domains that have a very bad ratio of links out to links in.

Don’t have the time to check your backlink portfolio for the warning signs?

For the next week we’ll do it for you. For free!

First come first serve so if you want peace of mind just shoot us a message on our new Facebook Timeline or send us an email at [email protected] and we’ll get the ball rolling!

See you next week!
