3 Cool Tips From Retail Global

by Jim May 29, 2018

Back from another awesome experience at Retail Global on the Gold Coast. Still my favourite eCommerce conference.

Aside from the great networking opportunities, I had the honour of doing live site reviews alongside some industry leaders. Learning cool tips and secrets from fellow attendees is always worth the trip.

What I learned

• Pay attention to your competition

• Don’t be afraid to tweak your site or try new features

• The 3 cool tips that could boost your sales

• Learn to see things from your customer’s perspective

Hey, welcome back Rankers. Just got back from Retail Global. My voice has only just returned. Nonstop talking for three days. But I had a fantastic time as always and Retail Global as I keep saying is my favourite Ecommerce conference. I don’t even get to see the speakers. Maybe that’s why it’s so good because I don’t get to see myself. But it’s just the networking and the community that Phil Leahy has built around Retail Global, and I get to learn so much just by doing that networking.

My favourite time of the whole conference was actually doing these live site reviews. Cool Insider Tips I did them with Jason Kencevski. I’m sorry if I’ve said your name wrong, Jason. Britney Muller from Moz, and Wayne Baskin from Booktopia. Really, really smart people but damn we had fun. We were just picking apart people’s sites live. They volunteered them, but we just had so much fun, like Wayne was just providing so much information. I mean these two guys here, like major retailers, right, so you go and see these two guys giving you advice, free advice, and just some of the gems that were coming out. I was actually Slacking staff back here in Melbourne to say, “Hey try this on this client. Try that on that client,” and just all these little things.

Even we were amazed at some of the sites that we looked at, I mean some were not that bad, but others were really good. I mean they needed to tweak a few things, and there were things they could always do to improve, but just some innovative things. Like this one was on beserk.com.au, and I’ll just bring that over the other side of the screen so you can see what it’s doing there. But basically they’ve got same day dispatch, and they’ve got a countdown to that same day dispatch. Now I’m going to start using that with some of our clients. It’s just little things like that, that until you stop and you look around.

Pay Attention to Your Competition

I said to people, “Retail Global for me is a bit like, I feel like a bit of a meerkat because you spend a whole year with your head down bum up doing your work, and then you get to Retail Global and you go ‘Oh Wow, look what’s going on. Look at what all these people are doing’ “. And there’s just little things like that that you learn along the way. A couple of the other gems that I got was if you were doing small priced items and you tend to sell quite a few of them, one technique was to have a maximum order size. So it gives the user an experience of, “Oh, these are usually ordered in bulk. So you can only order 30 of them,” or whatever. So it starts to boost the orders, starts to get the orders bigger. These are just little things, little tweaks. Another one was use your receipt page, like a lot of people in Ecommerce, and this one comes from Wayne as well, from Booktopia. A lot of people in Ecommerce, we all have the related products and a lot of people put them at the cart level. So you know the idea is, is that you’re in the cart or you’re at the checkout, and you’re about to buy, what else can we get into the cart, what else can we get you to buy on the way out the door? What Wayne from Booktopia suggested, and they tried it, and you’ve got to split test these things of course, was use our Thank You page to say, “Hey people who also bought that item, bought this one, or maybe you’ll like these products as well.

So you get them to purchase again, and you just bundle it with the same order, so they’re not up for extra delivery charges or anything like that. I’m going to try it with a couple of our clients. Just three things that I got from that conference, just awesome stuff. So hope to see you there next year, and if you’re in Vegas there will be one, I think it’s in October, but I’ll get back to you closer to the time. If you’re on the Mornington Peninsula, tomorrow morning I will be presenting at the Bite Conference, and we’ll see you next week. Thanks very much. Bye.
