The original article followed a review of a newly launched online shop. It looked good, but the review raised a more useful question: could a customer or search engine understand what the store sold?
A platform can provide useful defaults. You still need to check the pages, content and configuration actually delivered to visitors.
Make the offer clear
Look at the homepage without relying on the hero image. Does the visible text explain the products and who they are for? Do the title and main heading support that explanation?
Keep branding where it helps customers identify the shop. Don’t replace it with a list of keywords. Use product descriptions to explain relevant details, fit and differences rather than filling space to reach a word count.
Compare URL types, not just totals
A product sitemap, a full-site crawl and search results cover different populations. A store may have useful collections, editorial pages and other content as well as products. Their totals do not need to match the SKU count.
Inspect unexpected URLs, canonical signals and indexing directives by page type. Don’t conclude that the sitemap is broken merely because a crawl found more pages, or remove useful content to reduce a total.
Check the rendered template
Review representative home, collection and product pages. Use headings to organise the content, and make important information available as text. A repeated brand heading is not automatically a fault, but it should not obscure the page’s actual subject.
Include the customer journey in the review: product choice, delivery information and the next step. Our conversion work looks at that experience after the visitor arrives.
Diagnose performance before buying a fix
Test representative pages and inspect images, scripts and other loading work. A performance score is a diagnostic signal, not a ranking threshold. Don’t assume a platform plan upgrade will fix the cause.
Choose content topics from real customer questions, not a universal weekly quota. Start with our SEO audit checklist or discuss the site through our SEO service.
Prioritise the customer offer and journey first, then indexing and templates, and diagnose performance before buying a fix.
