A Penguin Like Update – original post here
Hey, welcome back, Rankers. Out with the crew again. A few things happening this week. Some weeks there’s nothing to talk about, and then other weeks, like this week, there’s heaps to talk about. The main thing being Penguin. But we are working on another story that’s just happened yesterday. Google has, in case you haven’t noticed when you’ve been doing your searches, Google has removed all the ads down the right-hand side of the page. So if you’re using AdWords now, guess what? It just got more expensive for you. Yeah, right. Another day ending in ‘Y’ and Google makes more money.
But basically, if you go and do a search, and I’ll show you one here. Say this is a search for ‘skip bin hire.’ You can see we’ve got four ads here now and none down the right-hand side whatsoever. So the third…Oh, sorry, there’s the four at the top and there is right down at the bottom of the page here, we’ve got three down at the bottom. I don’t click on those. I don’t think anyone does. But I’ll be bringing you more about that once we start to see what happens to people’s cost per click because I think it’s going to all go up.
But what I do want to talk to you a bit about today was what looks like to be a Penguin. Now, no one else is talking about it but on Friday afternoon I was watching a couple of searches specifically, and as I was doing the searches they changed. So what I have here is some screenshots from Friday afternoon and then Saturday morning, all the results changed back again, and they stayed that way for the weekend. And then today, I’m recording on a Monday, they all reverted back to what I was seeing on Friday night. So this is just one search and I’ve done this across several searches and I’m seeing similar patterns. So I’ve checked all the algorithm checkers out there. I haven’t seen any that have said that, “Hey, the temperatures changing.” But you may remember back on the…I think it was the 13th of January? Yeah, there we go. I did this show and in this show, I said, “Don’t worry about the algorithm checks. Just have a look at this search and see, just follow this search and watch what happens to this search.”
And the search was ‘skip bin hire’ and the number one and the number two result for that were this company here, Rentaskip, which is now number six and this one here, Cheapestskipbinsmelbourne.com.au, which was number two. They’re now number eight. So those two have both fallen, as have a bunch of others. If I do a search for outdoor furniture…And we’re not talking little changes here. You’ll get a lot of little changes from Google over time. We’re talking major, major changes.
So this is a search I was doing Friday afternoon. See all this yellow here? This yellow means that this browser hasn’t seen that search or those results at those positions before. It’s the first time it’s happened, which is today. Then if I go and have a look at…You can see this one down here, Masters is down seven spots. Masters were number one, and this has happened…So Friday afternoon Masters was number one and Friday evening Masters was number nine. And then, Saturday morning Masters was back at number one and then this morning they’re down at number eight. But it’s not just that company; there is a bunch of them.
So this is the search how it is pretty much Friday night and also now. And this is the same search how it was this morning before we started work and then about a quarter to nine it all changed again. And you can see there are some very, very distinct differences here. We’ve got…one of the big winners seems to be this company here who were not on the first page before. So that is outdoorsdomain.com.au. and they’ve got spots one and two which is interesting in itself. And that’s been the same all day. It hasn’t moved.
So far I’ve got ‘skip bin hire,’ I’ve got ‘outdoor furniture’. ‘Carpet’ was another one where we’ve seen a big change. So, if I go and have a look at ‘carpet’ and you’ll see here, if I just scroll down and wait for my numbers to appear…that one’s down one. That’s hardly anything to talk about. These guys are up three. These guys are up three. No big deal. This Yellow Pages entry is because I’m in Mt. Waverley as is this entry here because I’m in Mt. Waverley, but look at these two down here. I’ve got a couple down here. We’ve got Carpetworld that’s fallen down to number 18 and they were number 6 and we’ve got Floorworld that’s fallen down to 15 and they were number 4.
Both of these sites have backlinks, which are a little bit…How are you doing? On the face of it, you would say, or I’m saying, it looks like some sort of Penguin test or pre-Penguin roll out or a Penguin…I don’t know, but it’s been going all day and it hasn’t switched back. And it switched pretty quickly this morning across all of those results. I’ve seen it across other ones. I’ve seen it across pest control searches. Pretty much any ones that I’ve been keeping a watch on, it’s happened but I’ve had other people talk to me about it on YouTube channel, as well, so there’s been a few people in there that have seen some massive swings, some massive changes. So I don’t know whether this is a Penguin roll out. It kind of feels like it. It kind of feels like there’s something that’s about to happen when you see sort of changes like this. Changes like this don’t happen every day. It’s very rare that you see wild swings across unrelated search phrases, which is what we’re seeing right now.
I’m only seeing it in Australia. I haven’t seen anything in the U.S., but if you are seeing something then please let me know. On the Google AdWords stuff, the change in that, there’s conversations kind of just starting up over on our Facebook page so feel free to jump in there and give us your 10 cents worth, what you thinks going to happen with pricing for Google AdWords, but I can only see it going up. Our Facebook page is facebook.com/melbourneseo and we will see you next week. Thanks very much, bye.
